I Heard Colors

I remember your red piano, and how we raced at scales.
Some I knew only saw black marks on five lines.
But you showed me colors,
I heard colors.

Without leaving our street I went five hundred miles
I saw the house of the rising sun and the banks of the Ohio.
You showed me colors,
I heard colors.

Oh, balladeers, gypsy songs and rhymes.
Oh, balladeers, gypsy songs, teachers.

I was clumsy and I was young but I sang from my toes.
I’d go home, tired but happy, serenading the sidewalks.
You showed me colors,
I heard colors.

Oh, balladeers, gypsy songs and rhymes.
Oh, balladeers, gypsy songs, teachers.
